Chapter Six

Sitting in Blake’s Mercedes, I twirled the soft curls Lucy had put in my hair for my date. She’d done my makeup, too, but I’d vetoed the blue eye shadow this time. I frowned when we passed the freeway exit for the country club. I pulled against the tug of the seatbelt as I turned to watch the sign disappear in the darkening twilight of that warm summer evening.

“Um, I think you missed the exit.” I threw my thumb over my shoulder, pointing to the receding sign behind us.

Blake gave me a wink. “We’re not going to the country club tonight.”

“No?” I raised an eyebrow at his mischievous grin. “Where are we going then?”

His only response was to slip his fingers in between mine and raise my hand to his lips. My belly did a cartwheel. After all these years, I was on a date with Blake Remington.

He pulled into the driveway of his parents’ house—mansion is probably more accurate—in the Fabulous Forties neighborhood and parked out in front. Then he walked around the car to open my door. I hesitated before taking his extended hand. I hadn’t been back to this house since prom night and it felt unreal that I would be here on a date with Blake, the guy I’d crushed on my whole life and the person I’d watched walk away from me.

When we entered the foyer, I glanced up at the top of the grand spiral staircase and remembered the way I’d felt when I saw him standing right where he stood now. When I was silent for a moment, he cleared his throat.

“Um, I hope it’s all right, but I really wanted to cook for you. My new kitchen doesn’t have any pots and pans yet and my parents are gone for the evening so I thought this would be okay. But by the look on your face I’m thinking I may have blown it. Are you okay? Is this okay?”

I blinked and shook my head before giving him a reassuring smile. “It’s totally fine. That’s sweet of you to want to cook for me. I didn’t even know you knew how.”

“Well, that remains to be seen,” he said, chuckling. He pressed some buttons on the stereo and then soft jazz played from the kitchen’s built in speakers. Blake poured us each a glass of wine. “Cheers.”

I lifted my glass and clinked it into his. “Cheers.”

I sipped the purple Merlot that surely cost more than my paycheck as I watched Blake slice fresh cherry tomatoes he’d picked from the garden out back that rivaled Versailles. Not that I’d ever been to France, of course. But I’d seen pictures. We chatted easily as he cooked, dismissing my offer to help. Garlic and olive oil simmered on the stove and a large pot of homemade pasta boiled next to it. He looked hot in his apron and I couldn’t be blamed for staring as I took another sip of wine. He glanced up at me from the cutting board when I laughed suddenly.
